Hi. I’m Sophie and I started Shutter Jewellery in 2015, inspired by a love of photography, design and making things. I studied art and design, later taking photography tuition. I ran my own little shop and worked for a few companies who stocked wonderfully quirky products from designers. All these things combined brought me to begin Shutter Jewellery. I set about designing and making products that I would buy and wear and that hasn’t changed, even though the range of products has expanded and developed since I began.

I make all the items from my home studio in Walton on Thames, Surrey or sometimes from The Art Shed Gallery in Cobham. I try and source my materials from other small companies, UK based wherever possible. I’m a passionate believer in shopping small and will shout about a company to everyone if I love it.

I’m a big animal lover which shows in my work. My house is part home, part workplace, part zoo which is why, if you follow me on social media my jewellery posts are often interrupted by dogs, birds and lizards. Sorry, I can’t help it! Pictured opposite is Socks, my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a very important part of the whole operation. Even though it would appear he is only in charge of biscuits and naps, everyone who has an ‘office dog’ knows their business is better for it.

Each item is created using a tiny original photograph as the centrepiece, each one my own photography. Sometimes the photographs will be something from my portfolio taken another time and others I will go out and shoot with a particular use in mind. Inspiration comes from many places though the subject matter I come back to again and again is birds, though I have been through a botanical phase recently too. The photographs are chosen carefully as not every image has impact on such a small scale. I look for subjects with strong patterns and distinctive silhouettes which is why leaves, feathers, petals work so well.

The images are shrunk down sometimes as tiny as 8mm and used in a number of different ways to create the pieces. Usually this will involve setting them under glass and into sterling silver to create charms which will be the basis of a pendant or earrings. I also work with silver clay to create one off pieces and have a range of wooden jewellery in which I transfer the photograph onto recycled wooden tiles.

I am always experimenting with new materials and images. Please keep an eye on the blog for updates or follow me on facebook, twitter or instagram to see what’s new.
